Synopsis[]
John has a flashback to his first day at Wellston Private High School one year ago.
John managed to get into the prestigious school in the middle of the academic year, after painstaking efforts to prepare for and pass the entrance exams. John took it as a hopeful sign Wellston was a different kind of school, with a greater focus on its curriculum.
At first, everything seemed to be going well for John. A charming girl named Elaine cordially welcomed her new classmate to the school, asking the new student about his background prior to Wellston. John explains to the Healer that he was originally homeschooled prior to transferring and wanted to try something new. Then Elaine asked what his ability was. Everybody dropped what they were doing and listened for his answer. John replied he didn't have one, and the illusion he had was irrevocably shattered. Noticing his answer left her frozen, he reach out his hand in concern. It got him shoved backward. Just as Elaine was the first to welcome John, she was also the first to shun him upon hearing that he was a powerless cripple. Unfortunately, she wasn't the last. John would learn that Wellston, like everywhere else in the world, cared only about two things: strength, and crushing those without it.
Word quickly spread across that school that his lack of strength. And later, Crail and Lin menaced John for the sake of "educating" him about the hierarchy of their school. Mostly it involved obeying them...or else. At that moment Seraphina walked passed them. Recognizing her from his class, John called out and asked her for help, but she turned away and ignored him. Crail took offense at John getting distracted, and started throwing punches. The flash back cuts off here.
In the present, John is at home, sleeping in without a care in the world. He's rudely awoken in the late afternoon by the ringing of his phone.
